Rijeka is a relatively small and third largest city (120,000 inhabitants) in Croatia and the largest port, located on the northern Adriatic. It was a large industrial center in Yugoslavia, but the industry collapsed after communism, now it is more of a transitional, university and tourist town. Rijeka is an open and multicultural city, a city with a difficult history because it was under Italy, Austria and Hungary.
Now in the summer it is quite empty because citizens go on vacation to the islands, Istria and Dalmatia, but there are a lot of foreign tourists.
The heart of the city is the central street called Korzo and there are numerous cafes, restaurants, pubs… In the center of the city is the Governor’s Palace and the maritime and historical museum. Legend has it that the Croatian national anthem was written there.
In the center of the city there is a cathedral and many historical squares.
What can be visited is the sugar palace, the Kantrida stadium (former Rijeka stadium) among the rocks, one of the most unusual in the world, and right next to the sea, the sanctuary of the Mother of God in Trsat… It is interesting that the first torpedo in the world was made in Rijeka 150 years ago.
I think that there will be a Fan zone in the city center for fans from Sweden. It will depend on how many come.
Restaurants in Rijeka offer traditional, Mediterranean and autochthonous food.
There are a number of small taverns in the city such as Mornar, Fiume, Conca’ D Oro, Kings, Nebuloza, Na Kantunu… plenty of cafes and clubs. It is interesting to walk along the waterfront and the breakwater. Close to Rijeka, only 10 kilometers away, is Opatija, a very touristic place with numerous hotels. Opatija is very interesting to visit. Opatija is called ”the old lady of Croatian tourism”.
The Rujevica Stadium is a 15-minute drive from the city center, it is a training camp with a small capacity of 8,000 spectators.
The fans are the twelfth player of Rijeka, and the main fan group is called Armada.
The fans in Rujevica know how to create a good atmosphere in a small stadium.
In addition, Rijeka is the third most successful club in Croatia. The biggest competitors are Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk.
